Don't do the frills before the basics

My approach to interior design is to edit back again and again from all the add-ons you want to include. Less is more: to create a classic and timeless interior, you need to always think of essentials. Get the bone structure right, starting with the walls, windows, floors and cabinetry, then add on.

Do keep the backdrop plain

If you have art and a lot of things to display, then keep the walls and curtains plain to allow the objects and art to add the drama. I am personally a big fan of white and off white walls, and have used Dulux's ‘Timeless’ throughout most of my house.

Do add in architectural detail

If its possible to add a small cornice to rooms that are lacking in architectural detail, then that can easily bring elegance and scale to a space. A fireplace is often the focal point of a room, so if possible try to include this.

Do consider low bookshelves

If a place is small and it's hard to give up whole walls, then adding low bookcases is a good idea, as it gives space for books, objects can go on the shelf, and the walls above are free for pictures. Ledges are such a bonus.

Don't skimp on cabinetry

Cabinetry for me needs to be bespoke and of quality. Think classic and solid. Cheap cabinetry lowers the tone straight away.

Marble is best for countertops and splashbacks

In kitchens it's best to do the countertops and splashbacks in the same marble – it keeps things simple and it looks clean.

Do be careful with spotlights

Try to avoid spot lighting wherever possible, though it is essential in dark bathrooms and utility areas. Table lights are best. I always have a lighting circuit for living rooms to set the atmosphere for varied mood lighting and zoning a space. I'm not a huge fan of wall lights unless they're in bathrooms or being used to create drama.

Do mix up your rugs

I love mixing old rugs with new ones, it adds a layered effect. Some can be contemporary, but you always have to have some beauties from yesteryear.

Don't neglect your windows

If you're replacing your windows, make sure you get good quality pieces with the right period look. I always try to have traditional timber frames and sashes or casements.tot
