Branscombe
This is one of the best Airbnbs in the whole UK, let alone Devon. The setting is idyllic, with streams and brooks burbling around the garden and various bridges crossing back and forth – the owner has cleverly created an outdoor dining area on an island amongst all the water, which is possibly the nicest setting in which to eat a summer lunch. There's even a natural swimming lake for guests – but that's not all. The house itself is a brilliant amalgamation of the old and new, with one part being a former mill house and a modern extension that works so well. It sprawls up and down over various bedrooms and living spaces, with a spacious country kitchen, very generous utility room, two living rooms – one traditional, one with a ping pong table and giant TV – and a clever dining nook in the part of the house that brings old and new together.
The house can comfortably sleep eight guests across four bedrooms and has three bathrooms to accommodate everyone. If all that isn't enough to sell you on this house, it's a mere 15 minute walk from the beach at Branscombe and ten minutes from the closest pub across the rambling hills.

North Bovey
If you like your cottage interiors neutral and soothing, with accents from wooden beams, flagstone floors and original stones, this is the one to book. It's cosy and clean, with a light and airy feeling from the white scheme inside. The furniture is a well chosen mix of antique and new, with some textiles thrown in for comfort.

Northleigh
There are shepherds' huts across the country but they're not all created equally. This Devon one in a meadow a 15 minute drive from the sea is on the upper end of the spectrum, with pretty panelling inside, wooden accents and a mini woodburning stove. Outside, a fire pit and cosy sheepskin provide warmth whatever the weather.

Stoke Gabriel
The aptly named 'Dart View Barn' is a clever architectural gem, with a double height window on one facade offering views right across the river Dart and surrounding valley. From the bed on the mezzanine level or the sofa by the woodburner, the view is there to greet you at every turn. Inside, the interiors are modern and fresh with true charm.

Dittisham
In the best possible way, this house is quite mad. Halfway between a boat and a house, it is bold outside and full of nautical details inside, with a palette of white and blue and some enviable antique furniture. It's an enthralling house and has a lot to offer, not to mention tennis courts, a pool and gym... Did we mention the folly in the garden?
Sleeps: 2
From: £93 per night - 6/10
Hittisleigh
In the right weather, the exterior of this house says 'Ibiza' more than Devon, but inside it's full of English character with antique furniture and wooden beams. Limewash walls again hark at sunnier climes in the one bedroom 18th century farmstead, which is owned and has been decorated by an interior designer.
Sleeps: 2
From: £125 per night - 7/10

Widecombe in the Moor
The views from this country cabin are utterly lovely and the holiday house has been set up to let guests drink them in from every room. A large picture window and French doors in the open plan kitchen-living room flood the room with light and another in the bedroom gives bucolic views from bed.

Lustleigh
It doesn't get more picture perfect than this chocolate box cottage in what The Telegraph described as one of England's loveliest villages. Inside, it's every bit as lovely with soft grey walls and original beams in the bedroom, and a cosy dark blue in the snug living room. The cottage sleeps two and is perfectly roomy for longer stays.
