A few of my favourite things: getting to know interior designer Caitlin Miller

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens – or something a little more stylish? Interior designer Caitlin Miller gives us an insight into what she loves most

A dining area by Caitlin

Favourite recent purchase

I have an amazing antique Victorian cupboard that is covered in layers of matte black paint. I recently bought two Matilda Goad brass star backplates and clear knobs to put on the central portion of the cabinet. The shiny brass against the layered black is so satisfying. I also recently added another set of Desmond and Dempsey PJs to my collection; they are so comfortable and feel like such a treat. I love the long sleeve with shorts sets and also have the linen shirt in XL to wear over bathing suits in the summer.

Best piece of advice

My old boss Inge Moore, founder of Muza Lab, told me “You just have to do what works for you.” She said it in reference to parenting and becoming a mother, but I find it’s applicable to most things in life.

The dining room in Caitlin's own house

Favourite room

My dining room is such a special space to me. It holds so many memories. I had to convince my husband about the very dark taupe colour on all the walls, which I then painted over with layers of white abstracted wisteria. The wall colour makes makes everything placed in the room pop – flowers, food, people. Everyone looks so healthy and fresh in that room!

Favourite artist

When I was in elementary school, we learned about Jackson Pollock, and I was fascinated especially with the large-scale “drip” pieces. I thought they were so cool and still do. When I went on a school trip to the Met years later, I finally saw Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) in person, which was a special art moment for me.

Favourite holiday destination

I love to be anywhere by the seaside. For as long as I can remember, my family would go to the Outer Banks in the summer, and it’s still the most magical place to me. Recently I took my family to Deauville in Normandy, and waking up to see horses running along the surf was so special. And for my honeymoon, we went around the Caribbean to Barbados, Petit Saint Vincent, and Mustique. We’re about to have our ten-year anniversary, so I think it’s time to go back.

Favourite restaurant

I adore Daphne’s in Chelsea. It has the best food and the best atmosphere. I also love La Poule au Pot on Pimlico Road. Some of the best interiors shops are in that area, and then to sit on the terrace in summer or snuggled inside during winter is divine. And Petersham Nurseries – I love everything about that place, including the shop with all the lovely home and garden pieces.

Favourite museum

The Victoria & Albert Museum

Sylvain Sonnet

I love the V&A. Anytime I have a day without plans, which is increasingly rare, having a wander around the V&A is bliss. They have a Cartier exhibition at the moment, which I cannot wait to see.

Favourite cocktail

Margaritas and Ranch Water (tequila, soda, and fresh lime) are my go-to cocktails.

Favourite city

After graduating, my first job was based in Singapore. I was 22 and had never been to Asia before, but packed my bags and ended up falling in love with the city. It has such a wonderful mix of cultures. I also love NYC, which has the most amazing energy and feels like anything can happen there. And I’m proud to call London home for the past decade. All three of these cities have such diversity and always new things to discover.

Favourite design era

It’s so hard to pick one era! Probably the 1920s Art Deco era. I love how all details are thought out, and nothing is too small to be considered. I’m also a big fan of Hitchcock movies of the 1950s. The sets are wonderful, even the little London flat in Dial M for Murder. Nothing is more chic than Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief. Also Rick’s Café Américain from Casablanca: the huge studded doors, the fringed barstools, the amazing romantic lighting. I had the chance to do some work in Morocco, which was a really special experience.

Favourite colour

I love very, very dark blue green hues like the ocean when there is very dense coral underneath the surface.
